| Announcing the 2010 NY Ag Literacy Week Book:
The Tree Farmer

In celebration of National Agriculture Week (March 15th-19th), volunteers
throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to
second graders. Students and teachers will also benefit from hands-on lessons and
receive follow up activities. The book will be given to the school
library with a bookplate recognizing the donor and NY Ag Literacy
Week. More than 1,500 books were donated last year while thousands
of second graders participated in fun and educational activities.

Local ALW efforts will be coordinated by a volunteer in
each county. If you are interested in voluteering to read or would like a volunteer to come visit your classroom please contact you local coordinator.

The book chosen for 2010 Agriculture Literacy Week is The Tree Farmer written by Chuck Leavell and Nicholas Cravotta. This is a beautifully illustrated book that highlights the Timber Industry. The Tree Farmer was featured as the 2008 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference and won the National Arbor Day Foundation 2007 Book of the Year award.

books cost $11 and will be donated to the school after being
read. Send your donation to your county coordinator (make checks
out to Cornell University and indicate "Ag Literacy Week" in the
memo line). Donors will be recognized on a special bookplate.
You may choose to have your donated book go to a specific
school, or to read it yourself.
